In collaboration with the Public Schools of Brookline and the Brookline Housing Authority, Steps to Success (STS) supports students from low-income families to defeat the cycle of poverty. From grades four through twelve and through graduation from college, STS works closely with parents, teachers, and school personnel to create a wraparound network of support that fosters an “I’m going to college” mindset. Steps to Success is the only Brookline program addressing the educational needs of children living in these households. In efforts to continue raising awareness as well as providing financial assistance, STS hosts an annual Gala event. This year’s Gala was on May 10th and the theme was Step Up For Our Stars.
This year’s guest speaker was Dale Russakoff, author of The Prize. Her critically acclaimed investigative journalism about attempted educational reform in Newark, NJ revealed that this sort of change requires something extra—something more than millions of dollars from a social media magnate, politicians, and donors with deep pockets. The Prize resonates with supporters of STS because for 17 years, we have been building more than programs to support the educational achievement of our students; we’ve been building relationships.
